About the terms and conditions
This document sets out the relationship between ShelfCat and the user. By ShelfCat we mean the website and services offered, and by the user we mean both visitors to, and account holders on ShelfCat. By ‘data’ we mean both the information pertaining to, and identifying the user and the data associated with that user on ShelfCat.
By using our website you agree to be bound by our terms and conditions as set out below. These are not exhaustive and may be revised at any time by ShelfCat.
About ShelfCat
ShelfCat is a website for the cataloguing and collation of, non-exhaustively, books, journal articles, newspapers, edited volumes, monographs, novels, and scientific papers. It also allows the user to associate these records with their own research notes. The user can also track these items as they add them to collections, read, and review them.
Basic rules
You must be thirteen years or older to make an account. If you are under eighteen years old you must have the permission of a parent or guardian. Any use that contravenes this is considered unlicensed and unauthorised.
You may not use your account or data or this website for any illegal or defamatory purposes. By browsing the website, you agree that your data may be deleted and your account closed at any time, for any reason. You also agree that your comments, reviews, and messages to other users may be subject to moderation. ShelfCat and/or their moderators’ decisions are final.
Any material you upload must conform to all local laws, and you must have all required permissions. You agree not to hold us responsible for any copyright claims made against you, and you agree that we may at any time take down information that a third party raises claims against, or according to the wishes of the moderators.
By making an account, you further agree that you in no way, shape, or form will hold ShelfCat liable for any misuse that may arise. You also agree that the use of the account is for the account holder alone, and that you the user will not share your account with any other person. Nor will you use your account to evade any moderation imposed on another user.
You also agree that ShelfCat is neither responsible nor liable for any losses that may occur via any third party sites or services that may now or in the future be linked via the site. Furthermore, though ShelfCat may contain links to any third party sites, apps, businesses, or services, you agree that ShelfCat has no control over nor responsibility for those links, websites, or services.
Our Rights
Except for your User Content, the Service and all materials therein or transferred thereby, including, without limitation, software, images, text, graphics, illustrations, logos, patents, trademarks, service marks, copyrights, photographs, audio, videos, music, and User Content (the "ShelfCat Content"), and all intellectual property Rights related thereto, are the exclusive property of ShelfCat and its licensors. Except as explicitly provided herein, nothing in this Agreement shall be deemed to create a license in or under any such intellectual property Rights, and you agree not to sell, license, rent, modify, distribute, copy, reproduce, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, publish, adapt, edit or create derivative works from any materials or content accessible on the Service. Use of the ShelfCat Content or materials on the Service for any purpose not expressly permitted by this Agreement is strictly prohibited.
You may choose to, or we may invite you to submit comments or ideas about the Service, including without limitation about how to improve the Service or our products ("Ideas"). By submitting any Idea, you agree that your disclosure is gratuitous, unsolicited and without restriction and will not place ShelfCat under any fiduciary or other obligation, and that we are free to use the Idea without any additional compensation to you, and/or to disclose the Idea on a non-confidential basis or otherwise to anyone. You further acknowledge that, by acceptance of your submission, ShelfCat does not waive any rights to use similar or related ideas previously known to ShelfCat, or developed by its employees, or obtained from sources other than you.
Copyright
If you believe that your copyrighted work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement and is accessible via the Service, please send us the following information
- An electronic or physical signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner;
- A description of the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed upon;
- A description of the material that is claimed to be infringing and where it is located on the Service;
- Your address, telephone number, and e-mail address;
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or law; and
- A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information is accurate, and that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act on behalf of the owner.

Paid services
Billing Policies. Certain aspects of the Service may be provided for a fee or other charge. These fees and charges, if any, are described on the website. If you elect to use paid aspects of the Service, you agree to the pricing, payment and billing policies applicable to such fees and charges, posted at the website. ShelfCat may add new services for additional fees and charges, or amend fees and charges for existing services, at any time in its sole discretion.
No Refunds. You may cancel your ShelfCat Account at any time; however, there are no refunds for cancellation. As permitted under the terms of this Agreement, ShelfCat has the right at any time for any reason or no reason to suspend or terminate your Account, terminate this Agreement, and/or refuse any and all current or future use of the Service without notice, refund, obligation, or liability to you. In the event that ShelfCat suspends or terminates your ShelfCat Account or this Agreement, you understand and agree that you shall receive no refund or exchange for any unused time on a subscription, any license or subscription fees for any portion of the Service, any content or data associated with your ShelfCat Account, or for anything else. You acknowledge that ShelfCat has the perpetual and irrevocable right to delete any or all of your content and data from ShelfCat's servers and from the Service, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and for any reason or no reason, without any liability of any kind to you or any other party.
Disclaimers of warranties
The service and all information, content, materials, products (including software) and other services included on or otherwise made available to you through the service are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, unless otherwise specified in writing. ShelfCat makes no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, as to the operation of the service, or the information, content, materials, products (including software) or other services included on or otherwise made available to you through the service, unless otherwise specified in writing. you expressly agree that your use of the service is at your sole risk. To the full extent permissible by applicable law, ShelfCat disclaims all warranties,express or implied, including, but not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. ShelfCat does not warrant that the service, information, content, materials, products (including software) or other services included on or otherwise made available to you through the service, ShelfCat’ servers or electronic communications sent from ShelfCat are free of viruses or other harmful components. ShelfCat will not be liable for any damages of any kind arising from the use of the service, or from any information, content, materials, products (including software) or other services included on or otherwise made available to you through the service, including, but not limited to direct, indirect, incidental, punitive, and consequential damages, unless otherwise specified in writing. certain state laws do not allow limitations on implied warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. if these laws apply to you, some or all of the above disclaimers, exclusions, or limitations may not apply to you, and you might have additional rights.
Privacy and Data
ShelfCat uses Sentry, an error and exceptions handling service, to collect and analyse user-data. In essence, this means that when something goes wrong and you are logged in, we can see what happened when it went wrong. This is to help us fix bugs and improve the site. We endeavour to keep PII (Personally identifying information) to the minimum required to help us fix errors and provide a consistent level of service. However, this requires some data to be sent to Sentry's servers. You can read their privacy policy here.
